About Alameda
Alameda, with a population of 76,459
(2000 census) is a dynamic San Francisco Bay Area city. Alameda grew
nearly 20% from 1980 to 1990.
"Over 48% of Alameda households have annual incomes over $50,000.
The average household income is $68,376. Within a five-mile radius,
70,000 people hold a Bachelor's Degree or better, and 62,500
households have an income over $50,000."

By major retail category, restaurants garner $54 million,
grocery/drug items $230 million, home electronics over $14 million,
apparel over $50 million, footwear $11 million, home furnishings
over $6 million, home appliances over $6 million and home
improvements/remodeling over $17 million annually.
Education
98% of Alameda high school students complete all four years.
Approximately 65% of residents over 25 are college-educated, and 40%
are employed in executive, managerial and technical occupations.
The community is also home to the College of Alameda and the
California School of Professional Psychology. A one-stop employment
center at the city of Alameda can help link employers with qualified
employees.
California State University at Hayward and the University of
California at Berkeley are both in close proximity to Alameda. They
provide higher education to residents and a top-notch work force to

Technology-Related Businesses
The city's success in attracting high-tech companies is evidenced by
the concentration of software, programming, networking, peripheral
manufacturing, alternative transportation, biotech and related
service companies. Over 200 high-tech businesses are located
throughout the city in the Harbor Bay and Marina Village business
parks, and the Lincoln Alameda Center. The former Naval Air Station
-- now Alameda Point -- is undergoing conversion to private and
commercial uses.
Jobs
Among its labor force of 38,240, approximately 37,000 Alamedans are
currently employed. The unemployment rate, city-wide, is a low 3.1%.
Transportation
Oakland International Airport is just five minutes from Alameda
Alameda is served by AC Transit, BART shuttle service, and two ferry
systems. The Oakland International Airport is immediately adjacent
to Alameda. The community is accessible from Highway 880 via four
bridges and from the Oakland/Jack London Square area by tunnels
running beneath the estuary.
Alameda's compact geography, in addition to its bicycle and
pedestrian-friendly amenities, encourages alternative transportation
within Alameda.
Housing
The vacancy rate in Alameda is under 5%. There are 14,800 rental
units and the median value of owner occupied property is $280,000.
Alameda offers housing in all price ranges to meet the needs of
residents.
Recreation
Alameda has 14 parks, many equipped with first-rate baseball
diamonds, tournament-quality golf courses, soccer fields, beaches,
bird refuges, bicycle and pedestrian paths, natural open space,
extensive picnic areas, and waterfronts.
The shoreline parks along the San Francisco Bay and the San Leandro
Marina extend for over six miles, offering spectacular views of the
San Francisco skyline and the East Bay hills. Marinas abound, with
over a dozen yacht brokers, a half dozen yacht clubs and over 3,400
boat slips and dry boat storage spaces, more than any other
community in the Bay Area, second in the nation to Marina Del Ray.
Arts
Alameda hosts several of its own community arts including; theater,
a civic light opera, a community band, a historical museum, cultural
activities and a diverse community of musicians, writers,
craftspersons and artists. Alameda is within minutes of the
galleries, museums, theaters, symphony, ballet and opera in San
Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley.
